GUMICS2 movies

Note: These movies are in Macintosh QuickTime format, but the Unix X-window program xanim can also display them.

Run 1: piecewise constant solar wind

A composition movie contains the earthbound magnetic field lines and solar wind streamlines in the upper panel. The lower panel displays northern hemisphere ionospheric field-aligned current pattern and potential contours on the left. The right side of the lower panel displays the northern hemisphere ionospheric height-integrated Hall conductivity, together with the potential contours. The horizontal current arrows are also displayed in principle, but they are too short to be visible. There is one blue dot per ionospheric grid point, however, so the blue dots give information of the grid point density. The blue loopline marks the open/closed field line boundary.

The solar wind conditions are available as GIF image.

Run 2 on my PC: event 860429

The first composition movie was computed on a PC (using just 20MB of memory) so the resolution is poor (small grid). In the middle of the movie the font and background colors change but don't let this disturb You!

The solar wind data is available as a GIF image and as a PostScript figure. These figures give the solar wind Bz, Btot, density, and dynamic pressure. The Bx,By components varied quite a lot. The solar wind temperature was equal to 100.000 K.

Simulated satellite date was also saved. Satellite number 5 is in the far tail (GIF/PostScript). Satellite 24 (GIF/PostScript) was on geostationary orbit on the dayside, (X,Y,Z)=(6.6,0,0).

Finally, satellite number 1 was on the nightside near-Earth region, (X,Y,Z)=(-10,0,0) (GIF/PostScript).

Run 2: event 860429

This is the same run as 2PC but this was computed on Cray and has much denser grid. Compare the composition movie with the above PC version.
