Summer school: Instrumentation for Space Physics and Astronomy

28.5-1.6.2001 in Physics Department, University of Turku, Turku.

Organiser:

FINNISH GRADUATE SCHOOL IN ASTRONOMY AND SPACE PHYSICS

1. Target group

Summer school is intended for graduate students and advanced undergraduate students of astronomy and space physics. The students of Finnish Graduate School in Astronomy and Space Physics have a privilege for participation.

2. Purpose of the school

The summer school includes studies of measurement physics, detector materials, instrument design and manufacturing. Special attention is paid to testing of instruments, and requirements set by space environment (vacuum, background radiation, thermal problems, etc.). The lectures will concentrate on detectors for particle radiation, and electromagnetic radiation in the infrared, X-rays, and gammarays. Lectures will be also given on how to make science instrument proposals for ESA. Students will be required to write their own proposal for an instrument as a group work (3-6 students/group). The proposal document, which will be made partly during the course and finished by the June 21, will be reviewed and used as the criterion for credits (2 ov) and grade.

4. Proposal writing

L. Alha, T. Eronen, M. Rawlings, and E. Riihonen will supervise the proposals. The supervisors will be present in the computer classrooms during the periods marked "Working in the groups" in the program. The students have possibility to continue their group works in the evenings after other program. Students can select an instrument to construct from different alternatives. Students' own ideas and wishes will be taken into account, if possible.

The proposals have to be completed and returned to the referee before the June 21. Students are informed on the acceptance of propasal by the end of August 2001.
